Essential Hurricane Tips for Florida Homeowners

Thursday June 29, 2023

While Florida may be nicknamed the Sunshine State, there are a few months every year that is considered hurricane season. As a coastal state, Florida is particularly vulnerable to the impact of hurricanes due to its geographical location and numerous waterfront communities.

Storm season runs from June 1 to November 30, bringing the potential of severe thunderstorms, tropical depressions, and of course hurricanes. With the season underway, these helpful tips can help you prepare your home with confidence.

Trim Trees and Remove Outdoor Debris

While hurricanes can vary in terms of intensity, the strongest hurricanes can have winds surpassing 155 mph. These strong winds easily snap vulnerable tree branches, sending them crashing down onto roofs and powerlines. Be sure to trim any branches that are close to your home and remove any dead or weak trees that could potentially fall during the storm. It is important to note that tree trimming is often in high demand during hurricane season, so waiting until a hurricane is approaching may not allow enough time for tree trimming services to address your property’s needs in a timely manner.

In addition to trimming trees around the property, outdoor furniture should be secured as well. This includes patio sets, trash bins, and other objects that could be picked up by the strong winds. By removing debris, homeowners can create a safer environment for the entire neighborhood.

Check Windows for Proper Seals

Windows are extremely vulnerable and even dangerous during hurricanes. Loose or damaged windows can act as a point of entry, which creates internal pressure and potentially leads to structural damage in severe cases. Water from heavy rainfall can also breach improper or worn-down seals, causing water damage to walls, floors, and belongings. Even a small leak can cause damage that contributes to the growth of mold and mildew, leading to long-term issues with indoor air quality.

Depending on the location of the home, residents may need to take precautionary measures such as installing hurricane shutters. Hurricane shutters or coverings act as a barrier between vulnerable points of the home like doors or windows, preventing debris from breaching the home. These shutters are more common among coastal homes as the brunt impact of hurricanes is felt the hardest in those areas compared to inland properties.

Schedule a Roof Inspection

A well-maintained roof plays a critical role in keeping water out of your home. By having your roof inspected, you can identify any existing damage, weak areas, or loose shingles that could be further compromised by the force of hurricane winds. Addressing these issues in advance helps ensure that your roof is structurally sound and less likely to suffer significant damage during the storm. Given the vulnerability of roofs during hurricanes, be sure to schedule an inspection well in advance to have a thorough review with enough time for necessary repairs to be performed.

Getting your home prepared for hurricane season in Florida is an ongoing effort that requires homeowners to stay proactive year-round. Being prepared well in advance for hurricane season and staying informed are essential for mitigating potential risks and keeping your property secure.
